Lucas Charles was born in Memphis, Tennessee and spent his formative years in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He studied graphic design at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and North Carolina State University, College of Design, Raleigh. Lucas graduated with an MGD in 2002. He has been an educator at the University of Memphis for 19 years teaching courses including: Typographic Design I, Visual Thinking, Computer Assisted Graphic Design, Principals of Time-based Media, Graphic Design Candidacy Review, Typographic Design II, Image Design, Writing and the Design Process, Specialized Studies (Advanced Web, 3-D Printing, Silkscreen Printing, Sports Apparel, Motion Typography, Typeface Design), History of Graphic Design, Graphic Design Portfolio, Graphic Design Internship, Interactive Media Design, Workshop in Art I, and Workshop in Art II. In addition to teaching undergraduate classes, He has taught graduate courses including: Problems in Graphic Design, Visual Communication Research, Studies in 2-Dimensional Media, Direct Independent Study and Graduate Thesis. Students have won many regional, national and international awards with projects completed in classes. While teaching Lucas ran his own studio in Memphis for four years (The Commissary), working on a variety of projects including websites, posters, catalogues and identities. In 2006 he formed Faculty of Design.

Lucas’ work has been published and has received many distinguished awards including Gold, Silver and Bronze Addys from Knoxville and Memphis Ad Federations; Gold, Silver and Bronze medals from the AIGA; and Design Excellence awards from Push and UCDA. Design work is featured in Ride to Extraordinary, a 7-episode documentary series streaming on Amazon Prime and Apple TV+, Creative Quarterly Magazine, The Best of Business Card Design 9, 1,000 Greetings: Creative Correspondence Designed for All Occasions, 1,000 Type Treatments: From Script to Serif, Letterforms Used to Perfection, Adbusters Magazine, Siteinspire.net, Screenfluent.com, CSSmania.com and numerous other publications.

His professional work has been published alongside other designers from the United States, Germany, UK, Australia, Sweden, Brazil, Denmark, Singapore, Israel, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands. Publications have included works from prestigious well-known designers including Segura Inc., Sagmeister Inc., Ph.D, Milton Glazer, Duffy, Why Not Associates, Cahan and Associates, LSD, Untitled, Michael Osborne, Visual Dialogue, Nickelodeon Creative, Chen Design Associates and Goodesign.
